My dad and all his brothers are Firefighters for the city of New Rochelle. I think that it is a good job because if we didn't have people to do the job, a lot of people would be losing their homes. When my grandpa was on the job, ( now he is a retired Firefighter) my dad and his older brother were on as well. Then a few years later, their other three brothers ( he was one of five boys, and had one sister) came on the job. Then about four months later, they took a group picture of all five of them and their dad for the newspaper. The article was about all the brothers being on the job with their dad. My grandma actually still has the article with the picture framed in her room.
I think that it is cool to have the job of a Firefighter. Being able to go into a burning building to save someone's life. I know that it is a dangerous job, but someone has to do it, and I am glad my dad and uncles are the ones that are doing this job. When you want to be on the job, there is a lot that you have to do. First off, you have to take a written test, part 1. Then if you make it passed that, you have to do some obstacles with all the gear on. Otherwise it would be too easy and they would all pass that part. If you are wearing the gear, it makes it a little more difficult. It would be like you were on the job and you had to go into a burning building. You couldn't go in without the gear on, so it would make no sense to practice without it on. If you pass both you get put on to a waiting list.
I do worry if my dad and my uncles are going to be okay when they go into a burning building, or get called in for over-time. Over-time is when you aren't working, but you get called back into work because they need more help at a fire. My dad and his brothers, ( my uncles) all have a small portable radio that you can hear what is going on at a fire.
The fire department has parties that my family and I go to sometimes. There is a fire department Christmas party, and a fire department picnic. At the Christmas party, the younger kids get to go on Santa's lap and get a gift. Usually it is one of the firemen dressed up as the Santa. One year, it was my uncle, so it was like sitting on my uncles lap and not Santa Claus. You can also do arts and crafts; they have a really long table that has all arts and crafts stuff. It is in December, and I hope that I can go this year, even if I don't get to get a gift, I still like to go and just hang out.
The picnic is a lot of fun! It takes place over the summer at Salesian High School. You can go in the pool if you want . There is an arts and crafts table at the picnic as well. One year, there was an egg toss that almost all the kids there were in it. Another year, it was when squad 3 was in charge of it, the ladder truck came and we got to go up in it. My cousins, sisters and I got out of the pool to go in the truck. I went in with my cousin who is a year younger then me, my other cousin who is the same age as me and one of my sisters. My cousin who is younger then me is very dramatic, so when we got in it she was going, " I am going to die. Why am I doing this?!" My cousin, ( the cousin that is the same age as me), and I were saying, " Calm down. Nothing is Going to happen to you!" Then when we got about 30 feet or so in to the air in the little bucket she was fine and saying, " Go higher!!" Then my other cousin goes, " We told you that you had nothing to worry about!!" We got up to about 64 feet, and then the firemen said that he had to take us down, even though we didn't want to. We asked him how high it could go and he said about 94 feet, but he wouldn't take us up that high. There were kids in the truck telling us how high we were, which is how we knew, otherwise we would have had no idea. When we got off, the egg toss was going to start, so we ran back to where the pool was so we could do that.
Even though this is a dangerous job, I am glad that my dad and uncles do it and that they get to save peoples lives. Getting to go to the parties and stuff is just extra.
