1. Discuss      the changes on Morrie’s third appearance on “Nightline”. Note the changes in the atmosphere since      the first visit. Analyze his final      words to the TV aaudience and the significance of his parting words to Ted      Koppel.
2. “Forgive      yourself before you die. Then      forgive others” (pg 164) Why might      Morrie need to forgive himself and others.
3. How      has Morrie and Mitch’s relationship changed. What does Morrie ask Mitch to do when      Morrie is dead. Why do you think he      says this?
4. Discuss      Morrie’s “near death” experience the night before Mitch comes for the      thirteenth time. What is the lesson      that Morrie wishes to convey on this occasion.
5. What      is a perfect day according to Morrie. What is Mitch’s response to Morrie’s perfect day?
6. Discuss      Mitch’s concerns about his brother and examine Morrie’s advice.

UTOPIA and DISTOPIA UNIT

As a preview for our unit on Utopias and Distopias, write a list (using bulleting, if possible) of as many challenges that you can come up with that our society faces and why these are problems.

Opening Credit Assignment

Read Chapter 1 and 2 of The Giver.  Decide how you might represent the setting of this novel in 29 shots.  Write your shots down as short descriptions. Give the frame and angle of each shot.  Example:

1. Extreme close up shot, eye level- wheel of a bicycle moving.
2.  Far shot, high angle- boy on a bicycle riding away from the camera down a street of identical houses
3.  Medium shot, high angle - young girl playing with a doll on the grass... and so forth

My Utopia

As we read about Jonas' world, create your own version of utopia.  Look back at the list of problems in the world that you listed and consider how you might solve four of them in the utopia of your own making. And then write a short paragraph for each explaining the impact your decision would have on our world.

Ex:  1.  global warming and the impact on the envrionment

In my utopia, people would no longer use cars to travel.  People would live close to their jobs because they would have to travel by bicycle. We would continue to keep public transportation such as trains and subways, but they would be fueled by alternative energy sources.  The infrastructure of the city would change because we would need to have bicycle racks instead of parking meters. Roads would become places for bicylists and joggers.
