A FOOD THAT REPRESENTS MY CULTURE (FINAL)

A food that represents my culture is Brownies. Brownies represent my culture because they come from my mom's German culture.  My mom  and I have both been making brownies our whole lives. The Brownie recipe we use is Ghirardelli Brownie mix. Here it is:

  1. Pre-heat oven to three hundred twenty five degrees.
  2. Butter 8x8 pan (glass or metal).
  3. Blend: 1/3 cup of water, 1/3 cup of vegetable oil, and 1 egg in a medium size bowl.
  4. Add 1 pouch Ghirardelli Brownie mix and stir until all blended.
  5. Pour the batter into your baking pan.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes.

     Enjoy!

I have had Brownies for almost all of my birthdays ( except for this year's because I went camping for my party). The time I remember having Brownies most for my B-day was in the 1st grade, and I remember my parents bringing in the Brownies and the whole class singing Happy Birthday to me. My best friend Anna was in my class and so were a lot of my other friends. Another time we have Brownies is on Christmas. We make them and eat them on Christmas Eve and  after we have Christmas dinner.

I like brownies because I love warm delicious chocolate (especially the double chocolate brownie mix), but I don't like the crispy edges (and I like to eat them with a big glass of milk).

The two main kinds of Brownies are Chocolate and Butterscotch (blonde brownies) and you can add nuts, caramel, icing, sprinkles, chocolate and white chocolate chunks, and lots, lots more! More kinds of Brownies are Caramel, Double Chocolate, Cheese cake, and many more! I had blonde Brownies for my 3rd birthday and they were D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!! My favorite things to add to brownies are chocolate or white chocolate chunks, sprinkles, and caramel.

We often make caramel brownies from Ghirardelli and they are also very yummy (they are my 2nd favorite kind of brownies, and my favorite kind is Double Chocolate). I like them because they are all chocolate with a taste of caramel, and I like the Double Chocolate because they have little chocolate chunks in them.

For me Haitian patty's are very popular. We've had it at all of my family parties and a lot of church events. Haitian patty is very popular when it comes to parties. They are made with beef in the middle.

One of our night activity's for my church is a soiree. Also know as game night. Its just like it sounds. The people from the church and sometimes their friends would gather downstairs in the church and we play games and eat foods that people made. The food is very good actually. The thing is I don't really have a story on this food. Its been used in my lifetime plenty of times but I can't really talk about one. It would be nice for you guys to try out the recipe and see what you think of it.

Multicultural Day- FINAL

~Filipino Style Leche Flan~

~You will need~

  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 1 can of condensed milk
  • 10 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

~For the Caramel~

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 3/4  cup of water

Note:  Instead of caramel you can also use syrup.

                   - To make the caramel, put the water and the sugar in a saucepan.

                  - When the sugar is caramelized the caramel will be finished.

~How to make Leche Flan~

  1. Pour the caramel or the syrup into the bottom of a mold. Make sure the caramel or syrup completely covers the bottoms. Note: Use a oval, square, or round aluminum mold or for a special occasion you can use and aluminum mold.
  2. Mix the evaporated milk, condensed milk, egg yolks, and vanilla by hand or you can use a blender.
  3. Pour the mixture on top of the caramel or syrup. Fill the molds to about 1 to 1 1/4 inches thick.
  4. Cover the molds individually with aluminum foil. Preheat the oven to 370 degrees. Then place the molds in a large baking pan and fill the pan half way up. Note: You will know the flan is finish when you stick a knife into the flan and the knife comes out clean.
  5. Bake for about 45 minutes. After baking let the flan cool and refrigerate.

My mom has been making flan ever since I was little. Her friend gave her the recipe one day and she started making flan. My mom taught me how to make flan when I was 5. Flan is one my favorite desserts. In Filipino the flan symbolizes welcome and friendship. The host of the party must make the flan. Leche flan can be used for different occasions like Christmas, birthdays, and New Years day.

The proper name for Filipino style flan is leche Flan. Leche flan means "milk flan". It is a custard dessert with either caramel or syrup on top. The Spanish brought it to the Philippines and the Filipinos improved it to their liking.  Leche flan is mostly flavored with vanilla, but can be flavored with coconut, almond, pistachio, chocolate, lemon and orange.

Leche flan can be used different ways and can be used for different occasions. My mom and I have been making this for half. Leche flan is very big to Filipino's.
